ARE THERE ANY RISKS INVOLVED IN UNDERGOING A PFT?

A PFT is a noninvasive test and has very little risk involved. However, some patients may suffer from dizziness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A PFT?

You need to keep the following aspects in mind before a PFT:

  • Do not smoke before the test
  • Avoid wearing tight fitted clothes
  • Avoid heavy meals before the test

 

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN A PFT?
  • You will be asked to loosen your clothes and jewelry.
  • You need to ensure that your bladder is empty before the test is taken.
  • A short clip will be placed on your nose to ensure that breathing is only done through your mouth.
  • A clean mouthpiece is given which is attached to the spirometer.
  • Using the mouthpiece, you will be asked to breathe in and breathe out.
  • The steps may be performed for more than one time.
